Art Writing Symposium 2026: Re-Writing in the Age of AI
For decades, the phrase “all good writing is re-writing” has affirmed the practice of reworking and refining drafts of research papers, articles, museum label texts, curatorial essays, book manuscripts, and other forms of writing in and for the Arts. However, in the Age of AI, there is an implicit notion that “fast writing” is desirable, whereas human-generated writing and the sometimes lengthy processes associated with it, is devalued.
This symposium explores the idea that re-writing remains an essential tool for contemporary Art Writing. We will explore how re-writing in the Age of AI is essential for the creative process, that it reinforces academic integrity, and allows for underrepresented perspectives that might otherwise remain unheard.
The Art Writing Symposium is organized biannually by Dr. Brett M. Van Hoesen, Associate Professor and Area Head of Art History, as part of an on-going collaboration between the Nevada Museum of Art and the Department of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nevada, Reno.
